Abstract:

Phonon-polaritons, admixtures of electromagnetic and polar optic
phonon modes, allow the generation and detection of THz frequency
electromagnetic fields within electro-optic structures patterned into
common ferroelectric crystals such as LiNbO3 and LiTaO-3. The
mechanical component of phonon-polaritons, allows direct imaging of
these polaritons, and thus the EM field, throughout a photonic
structure.

The behavior of various simple photonic structures such as slab
waveguides, coupled waveguides, and resonant cavities will be
presented. Additionally, the response of polaritonic bandgap
structures, photonic crystals in materials that have a material
(polaritonic) resonance near to the imposed photonic resonance, will
be presented..
