Good Morning,

IS&T is announcing limited support for Google's Android platform software version 2.2 (Froyo) and above. Limited support includes support for:
MIT IMAP email (email only)
MIT Exchange service (email, calendar, and contacts)
Wi-Fi connectivity to MIT and MIT Secured Wi-Fi networks.

Due to the lack of standardization of the Android platform, support documentation covers as many Android 2.2+ devices as possible, regardless of the carrier. The documentation will include required settings requested by all Android models available today. The documentation will evolve as the Android operating system matures and new updates are released. Limited support documentation for Android can be found in Hermes: http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/hAdS

With the rapid pace of innovation in the mobile market and the surge of Android devices available from the carriers, many people are interested in getting a Android device. An Android device may be an option for those looking to:
Upgrade from their older devices (i.e. Palm OS, Windows Mobile 5 & 6)
Or users who want an iPhone-like alternative with comparable capabilities

The Android platform is a strong iPhone competitor with many iPhone-like features. For example, Android has an application delivery system called the Android Market, a rich WebKit browser capable of displaying webpages in both full format and mobile-optimized versions. Some of the latest Android devices, like Sprint's EVO 4G and Verizon's Droid X, include the ability to create a mobile hotspot, thus eliminating the need to physically tether to your laptop (feature charges do apply). Currently, all major carriers carry Android devices and although many of the latest devices like Verizon's Droid X, Sprint's Epic 4G, and AT&T's Captivate are being shipped with Android 2.1 software, these devices are expected to be updated to Google's latest version of Android 2.2 (Froyo) software and are therefore recommended for purchase.

REMINDER: MIT does have special pricing with all of the major carriers available for MIT Faculty, Staff, Students, and Affiliates. To compare service discounts, place device orders, for device upgrades, and if you're not receiving discounted service pricing, please refer to the following page. http://ist.mit.edu/services/telephony/cellphones

If you have any questions, need advice, or assistance setting up your device, please see the Mobile Ninja in Hermes or contact the Mobile Devices Team at mobile-help at mit.edu.

Best,
Matthew Sullivan
