Title: IS&T Announces Support for the Apple iPad
Good Morning,
Information Services and Technology (IS&T) is pleased to announce support for Apple's iPad. This support focuses on business-critical applications, including email, calendaring, contacts via Microsoft Exchange, MIT email via IMAP, MIT personal certificates, and MIT's virtual private network (VPN) service. IS&T will not be providing support for applications outside of the business scope (e.g., music synchronization, App Store, and e-books); other support options are available directly from Apple. http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/
At this time, the iPad can only be purchased from an Apple retail store<http://www.apple.com/retail> or online<http://store.apple.com/>. The device comes in two flavors: iPad, which has Wi-Fi only, and the iPad 3G, which has cellular data service and Wi-Fi. The iPad with Wi-Fi ranges in price from $499 for the 16GB model to $699 for the 64GB model, while the iPad 3G's price ranges from $629 for the 16GB model to $829 for the 64GB model. Domestic cellular data connectivity for the iPad 3G is provided by AT&T and requires a monthly, contract-less subscription. AT&T's domestic cellular data plans have two tiers: 250MB of data per month for $14.99 and unlimited monthly data for $29.99.
The operating system for the iPad is iPhone OS 3.2. Both the iPad and the iPad 3G will run all of your previously downloaded and purchased iPhone applications. Many of the popular App developers are updating their applications for the iPad's larger screen. These updates may come at an additional cost; please check the iTunes App Store at http://www.apple.com/iphone/apps-for-iphone/ for more information.

MIT's Mobile App is available via iTunes at http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mit-mobile/id353590319?mt=8. You can also find it by searching on "MIT Mobile" in the App Store. MIT's Mobile Web (http://m.mit.edu<http://m.mit.edu/>) will soon be optimized for the iPad's larger screen.
IS&T documentation for the iPad (and all other mobile platforms) is available through Hermes at http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/XQdS. Apple's extensive iPad knowledge base at http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/ covers how-tos for applications and features that are not currently supported by IS&T.
If you have additional questions, feel free to contact IS&T's Mobile Devices Team via email at mobile-help at mit.edu<mailto:mobile-help at mit.edu>.

Best,
Mobile Devices Team
