Information Services and Technology (IS&T) will retire MIT SMS, an interactive text messaging service, as of August 16, 2010.

MIT SMS was introduced in May 2009 as a beta service for members of the MIT community with traditional cellular phones. Users could send a text message to 648338 (“MITEDU”) and receive information from the People Directory, Shuttle Schedule, Events Calendar, and Stellar. SMS was a part of the MIT Mobile Framework, designed to provide mobile access to MIT information on any mobile device.

Since the beta launch, use of MIT SMS has been low, whereas use of the MIT Mobile Web has shown rapid growth. As more users at MIT adopt smartphones such as the iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android devices, the rapid growth of the MIT Mobile Web – and native applications – is expected to continue.

IS&T is committed to improving and expanding the MIT Mobile Web (http://m.mit.edu) and its native counterparts, such as MIT Mobile for iPhone.

If you have questions or feedback about the retirement of MIT SMS or enhancements to the MIT Mobile Web, please send mail to mobiweb at mit.edu.

Thank you,
Justin
