Dear Postdoctoral Scholars,
Happy New Year! I hope you had some time to rest and recharge during the winter break. In case you missed it, Vice President for Research Ian Waitz sent an important communication<https://orgchart.mit.edu/letters/minimum-salarystipend-postdocs> to postdocs and faculty just before the break. In it he announced MIT’s upcoming new minimum salary for postdoctoral scholars: $73,308, effective July 1, 2026. The communication also announced a new resource that we have developed with input from faculty and the MIT Postdoctoral Association, a Guide for MIT Postdocs and Faculty Advisors<https://postdocs.mit.edu/document/guide-mit-postdocs-and-faculty-advisors>. The Guide is meant to clarify roles and expectations for faculty mentors and postdocs, and we hope you’ll find useful in guiding discussions with your PI about your experience at MIT and your career development.

As we begin a new year, there are many opportunities for professional development and exploring your interests. In addition to January’s IAP activities<https://elo.mit.edu/iap/> and the many postdoc-focused offerings at CAPD<https://capd.mit.edu/channels/postdocs/>, I want to highlight the Smart Skills webinar series<https://www.nationalpostdoc.org/page/SmartSkills> offered by the National Postdoc Association. These monthly classes are free with NPA membership, and membership is free to you as an MIT postdoc: https://www.nationalpostdoc.org/page/Join.

To whet your appetite, here are the first 3 Smart Skills sessions (register here: https://www.nationalpostdoc.org/page/SmartSkills):

January 27 – Navigating the mentorship spectrum: Advocating for yourself and guiding others
February 24 – Building resilience: Tools and safety nets for international postdocs
March 24 – Designing your life: Frameworks for navigating career pathways

Don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

Best regards,
Ann
