MITPDA Newsletter
February 16th, 2022 | pda.mit.edu<https://pda.mit.edu/>
MIT PDA executive board is meeting Prof. Maria Zuber this Friday
In preparation for a meeting with Vice President of Research (VPR) Maria Zuber, the PDA would like to evaluate your financial situation at MIT. In brief, the rising cost of living in the Boston/Cambridge area currently does not align with the salary/compensation/stipend increase. To have solid grounds for our discussion with the VPR, we need to evaluate the current situation of the postdocs at MIT and we are grateful to all of you for completing this survey!
The link is: https://forms.gle/M7qsckmctnkCDhJQ8
IMPORTANT: THIS SURVEY IS COMPLETELY ANONYMOUS!!
Highlights from PDA's last meet with Prof. Zuber (10.29.2021)
PDA officers talked on behalf of the postdoc community about compensation and appointments,
* Emphasized the disparity of the postdoc salary and living cost in Cambridge.
* Described immense financial pressure on postdocs regarding ‘Housing and Childcare’.
* Brought up the negative aspects of one-year appointments which prevent the international postdocs to settle in as procedures like renting properties, driving licenses, and education for children are dependent upon the postdoc’s tenure.
* Asked to improve and equilibrate access to Postdoc Orientation material across DLCs.
* Asked for improved access to Postdoctoral Resource Fair material.
* Suggested some new avenues to amend PDA budget through e.g. the departments.
Prof. Zuber responded to issues raised by the PDA officers,
* Mentioned that she is in favor of raising the salaries of the postdocs.
* Informed that a raise covered by MIT, is only possible by capping the number of postdocs in each DLC but such a resolution would be hard to get approved by faculty members.
* On the tenure of the postdoc issue, she mentioned that PIs can only provide one-year appointment since the funds to the PIs are only guaranteed for the first year (for federally funded appointments).
