Inaugural Postdoctoral Symposium

Join us for the inaugural postdoctoral symposium held by the MIT Postdoctoral Association. This is a great opportunity to come together virtually and disseminate the brilliant work and accomplishments within the MIT postdoctoral community. The top 3 presentations will be selected by a panel of esteemed MIT Alumni from Industry and Academia based on novelty, impact and communication skills of the presenters and will be awarded $500, $750 and $1000.

The symposium will be held virtually on July 21st, 4:00-6:30pm EST.

Submit your abstract to have the chance to disseminate your work in the live virtual symposium.

MIT Climate & Sustainability Consortium Postdoctoral Fellowship Program

The MIT Climate & Sustainability Consortium (MCSC)’s newly launched Impact Fellowship Program is a postdoctoral opportunity for individuals who want to transcend academia & industry to apply their expertise to near-term change for a more sustainable future. MCSC Impact Fellows will work with MIT researchers and consortium industry members – in collaboration with external organizations and communities – to implement solutions needed for global economic transformation to address the global climate change and sustainability crisis. Throughout the program, Impact Fellows will prepare for leadership positions within the sustainability domain in a wide range of contexts, as well as prepare to drive research that advances breakthrough scalable solutions towards accelerated change. Northeastern University is committed to cultivating talent and promoting the full inclusion of excellence. This workshop is designed to serve those who are members of groups whose representation in faculty positions is smaller than their representation in the U.S. population. This includes women, racial and ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, first-generation students, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The NE-FFW is focused on the academic job search. The format of the two-day workshop includes faculty-led interactive discussions and peer-to-peer interactions.  Workshop topics include:  Finding Your Institutional Fit, Perfecting Your Interview Skills, Making Your CV Stand Out, Crafting Research, Teaching and Diversity Statements, Negotiating the Job Offer, and more.

To participate in the NE-FFW, there are several steps interested people need to take:

  1.  Submit the application packet by June 1st, 2021
  2.  Accepted applicants will be notified by mid-June
  3.  Confirm their participation by paying a $50 registration fee due in late June

Call for Postdoc Initiative Grant (PInG) proposals

Do you have an idea for an activity or event that you think would benefit postdocs in 2021? The MIT-PDA is pleased to announce call for a second (spring) round of Postdoc Initiative Grant (PInG) proposals. The grant aims to financially support a range of activities, events, and projects. PInG activities should be open to all postdocs across MIT (e.g. an application cannot be made for a Biology lunch series). Example activities include but are not limited to: Social gatherings, Recreational activities, Arts and cultural programs, Mental health and stress support groups, Professional development seminars and workshops, Groups to support postdoc women, parents, or minorities.

Join the PDA’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Work

Our monthly meeting will be a place to discuss activities of the DE&I Committee, as well as share ongoing activities in different departments and outside of MIT. Saturday morning run:

To increase our sense of community, we are excited to announce that we are starting a morning weekly running event for postdocs every Saturdays at 9am.

The plan is to meet at 9 AM at 77 Mass Ave for a warm up and then we will go for a run around Charles river. All abilities are welcome. We will form groups ranging from beginners to experienced runners.
After the run, for those of you willing to join us, we will go to Flour in Mass Ave to have at-a-distance breakfast and a coffee.

Science Rehashed<https://www.sciencerehashed.com/> is a non-profit podcast co-founded by Mehdi Jorfi, PhD (MGH/HMS) and  Shen Ning (MED’23) with the mission to make life science research more accessible to students and early career scientists around the world. Many students outside of first-world countries have limited resources when it comes to accessing the most current scientific research and journals. Through podcast interviews with researchers, Science Rehashed is making this information more available to science enthusiasts everywhere.

Postdoctoral Positions at the University of Virginia

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Virginia is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in materials for energy conversion in the framework of an ongoing research effort on moist electrical generators (MEG). Primary duties include the design, synthesis and development of novel conversion energy systems for energy storage and delivery. The work will involve chemical and solid-state synthesis to generate oxide materials, tailoring of their properties and structure as well as functional characterization, with the objective to add to the knowledge base of fluid materials for conversion to electricity. The successful candidate will be familiar with most or all of the following research areas: electrochemistry, materials synthesis and characterization (including among others X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical techniques). Additional responsibilities include the development of an efficient, reliable MEG for energy conversion; managing laboratory facilities, performing measurements, updating equipment, developing procedures for operation and safety; and assisting in drafting proposals, reports, and research papers.

Qualification requirements: A Ph.D. in materials science and engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering or a closely related field. A strong technical aptitude and working knowledge of electrochemistry, materials science and energy storage technology. Attention to detail and good record keeping ability. Excellent oral and written communication

Two Postdoctoral Positions at the University of Washington


Postdoctoral Position 1 at the University of Washington

A postdoctoral position is available in the theory and modeling of nanoscale devices and materials. This project involves electron flow in DNA nanostructures with quantum coherent interactions. The postdoc will collaborate with experimental groups at UC Davis, Georgia Tech and Emory University. An ideal candidate for this position should have expertise in density functional theory,  molecular dynamics, and preferably some background in quantum and semiclassical charge transport.
A Ph.D. in engineering or science is required. Interested candidates may contact Prof. M. P. Anantram for more information (anant at uw.edu<mailto:anant at uw.edu>). The location of the position is Seattle, WA.

Postdoctoral Position 2 at the University of Washington
A postdoctoral position is available in the theory and modeling of nanoscale devices and materials.  Candidates should have a strong background in physics and interested in applied problems. An ideal candidate for this position should have expertise in the theory and modeling of quantum coherence-decoherence, spin-spin interactions and preferably density functional theory. Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate with experimentalists will be helpful.

The Michelson Prizes

The Michelson Prizes are annual awards of $150,000, which support young investigators under the age of 35 who are using disruptive concepts and inventive processes to significantly advance human immunology and vaccine and immunotherapy discovery research for major global diseases.  The Prizes are funded by the Michelson Medical Research Foundation and overseen by the Human Vaccines Project -the application window for the 2021 Prizes will run from April 1 – June 18, 2021.


The 2021 Michelson Prizes will be looking for research proposals in two areas:

  *   Human Immunology and Vaccine Research
  *   Climate Change and Human Immunology

Applicants from the full spectrum of related disciplines, including clinical research, biochemistry, molecular biology, protein engineering, computer science, artificial intelligence/machine learning, biophysics, environmental health, nanotechnology, etc., are encouraged to apply.
