New England Future Faculty Workshop (NE-FFW)
You are invite to participate in the New England Future Faculty Workshop (NE-FFW)<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ffaculty.northeastern.edu%2Fadvance%2Ffaculty-recruitment%2Ffuture-faculty-workshop%2F&data=04%7C01%7Cd.campbell%40northeastern.edu%7C9ebe64c07d9d4ef75e7808d9003d62ce%7Ca8eec281aaa34daeac9b9a398b9215e7%7C0%7C0%7C637541085924483193%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=RBBzkhEGD0Y4NfJ9flDRKzXfsOqWKDn0tUr%2FU56B%2BDI%3D&reserved=0> which will be held virtually on Wednesday July 28th and Thursday, July 29th, 2021. The NE-FFW is designed specifically for postdoctoral fellows and advanced graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Health Sciences, Social Sciences, and the Humanities, who are interested in an academic career.
Northeastern University is committed to cultivating talent and promoting the full inclusion of excellence. This workshop is designed to serve those who are members of groups whose representation in faculty positions is smaller than their representation in the U.S. population. This includes women, racial and ethnic minorities, persons with disabilities, first-generation students, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The NE-FFW is focused on the academic job search. The format of the two-day workshop includes faculty-led interactive discussions and peer-to-peer interactions. Workshop topics include: Finding Your Institutional Fit, Perfecting Your Interview Skills, Making Your CV Stand Out, Crafting Research, Teaching and Diversity Statements, Negotiating the Job Offer, and more.
To participate in the NE-FFW, there are several steps interested people need to take:
1. Submit the application packet by June 1st, 2021
2. Accepted applicants will be notified by mid-June
3. Confirm their participation by paying a $50 registration fee due in late June
Here is the workshop flyer<https://faculty.northeastern.edu/app/uploads/sites/5/2021/04/FFW-2021-Flyer-3.pdf>.

Correlative light and electron microscopy in the zebrafish nervous system
An outstanding question in neuroscience is what can be learned about how the brain works by knowing how its neurons are wired together. Tracing the wiring diagram of a neural circuit is considered a powerful approach to validate or falsify computational models of brain function. However, the success of this approach has been limited by lack of neurotransmitter information, partial reconstructions of the nervous system, or both. Here, we use high resolution serial section electron microscopy to map the nervous system of an intact vertebrate: the larval zebrafish. We pair electron microscopy with confocal light microscopy of the same brain where the major excitatory and inhibitory neurons are genetically labeled. By combining connectivity and functional information in an intact animal, we can now interrogate neural circuit models for animal behavior at the system level - from sensory inputs to motor output.
Registration on EventBrite is encouraged but not required.
Please note that this meeting is open to Boston-area postdocs and PhD students (sorry, no PIs). After Q&A with the speaker, we will open breakout rooms for anyone interested in staying to chat, network, or further discuss the talk. In addition to these breakouts, SCGB Scientific Staff will be available for "office hours" to chat and answer questions about SCGB programs and support. Please contact Laura Long at llong at simonsfoundation.org<mailto:llong at simonsfoundation.org> with any questions.
