When and how did you start working with MIT postdocs?
Bob: I started at MIT in 2005 as a consultant, coming occasionally during the peak periods providing career counseling for undergraduates, graduate students and alumni.  I later joined MIT full time.
About five years ago, we were approached at the GECD by Dana Bresee Keeth to promote career services for postdocs at MIT. I took the position and have been providing career guidance for postdoctoral scholars at MIT since then. In addition to private appointments, I facilitate approximately 25 workshops a year with about 1,000 postdocs attending.
Is there any difference working with postdocs vs graduate students?
Bob: Postdocs are more advanced in their career and they demonstrate more leadership and collaboration. I find that they are more passionate and committed towards their work. Postdoctoral scholars also show ambiguities as some are stuck between pursuing the academic track or industry, while others still haven't identified which path they want to follow. Many have families and life value issues. In addition, MIT postdocs are more international and universal than graduate students with approximately 2/3's being non-US citizens. Postdoctoral scholars at MIT have a real passion to solve complex problems, they are driven and committed. They really inspire me. It is because of MIT postdocs that I remain motivated to continue in this role.
Are you facing any challenges?
Bob: I provide services for MIT postdocs only 3 days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). The challenge for me is to remain available for postdocs whenever they are in need. I always make an attempt to make myself available for postdoc emergencies, e.g. being invited for an interview last minute. I call this "My Magic Time".
Any tips for the MIT postdocs?
Bob: Since I am only present 3 times a week, the tip is: Don't wait until the end of your postdoc to explore a career path. Book an appointment in advance!  And 1 on 1 appointments are 100% confidential by law. In addition, always check out the GECD Events Calendar to attend workshops and programs that may assist you as you move forward in your careers.

Guest Bio:
Dr. Michele Ostraat, Advanced Materials Leader for the Aramco Research Center - Boston, serves in a leadership role directing a technical team in applied research in chemistry, materials science, and engineering. Her team translates materials discovery into commercial opportunities for diverse technologies, including membranes for gas separation, porous materials for catalysis, and advanced composites for corrosion resistance.
Prior to joining Aramco, she held numerous technical positions with increased responsibilities spanning new product and process development, prototyping, research and development portfolio management, and technology transfer. Michele was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs and Agere Systems, examining the synthesis of rare-earth doped aerosol nanoparticles and investigating the behavior of chalcogenide phase change materials. At DuPont's Experimental Station, she focused on aerosol synthesis and characterization of sub-micron and nanoparticles for advanced electronic application sand the occupational safety and health of nanomaterials. As Senior Director at RTI International, Michele led scientific teams developing products and applications for aerosols and nanomaterials for energy, defense,and health-related technologies.
Michele earned her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, CA. She holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

We have trained over 4,800 volunteers with befriending skills that benefit them, not only in their service on our 24/7 Crisis Services, but also in their ongoing relationships and within their communities. We have provided workshops and trainings on suicide prevention to more than 125,000 individuals in human service organizations, churches and community groups. As part of the MIT PDA Vendor fair 2018 we host a PowerPoint Karaoke.
We are looking for MIT Postdocs who are passionate about research and can present unknown scientific achievements in an appealing and funny way!
What do you have to do? Actually not much. You (and all other participants) have to provide a short (about 10 min) presentation about your research - which you might have used at a conference or a seminar. The slide decks will be shuffled among all participants on the day of the PowerPoint Karaoke and you have to present an unknown presentation in the funniest way you can think of.

Beginner? Show up early to learn how to play and improve skills. The courts are located in the Zesiger center. Enter through the Vassar street entrance and the attendees at the gate should let you through if you say you are with the PDA and present MIT ID. There are bathrooms in the facility where you can change or come with someone with a membership who can give you access to the locker rooms.
