Dear Postdoctoral Associates & Fellows,

The deadline to become mentors of the Mentor Advocate Program (MAP) is fast approaching (Wednesday August 1st 2018). The MAP program is a volunteer program designed to complement the current advisor system by helping first-year students to build relationships with staff, faculty, graduate students, and post-docs; to monitor their academic performance and personal well-being; to offer encouragement; and to provide a proactive support network.

This program is great way for the postdoc community to give back by volunteering their time as mentors. It is also a great opportunity for postdocs interested in teaching careers to get to know the perspectives of minority students.

More information about the program is available on the MIT office of Minority Education website.

Program details:

During the freshmen year, protégés attend a kick-off event to become orientated with MAP, meet the potential mentors for the first time, and learn how to make the most of the mentoring relationship. Mentors and protégés attend two to three MAP events and meet informally at least three times per semester. Together, they create goals for the relationship and create a schedule of when to meet and how to best communicate. Protégés also engage in a number of assessments to guide them in a discussion of potential majors and careers. MAP program staff check-in with the protégés and mentors throughout the academic year to monitor and support the relationship.

Postdocs who are interested in becoming a mentor may apply here<https://ome.mit.edu/who-ome/map-mentor-application-2018-2019>
