Guest Bio:
Dr. Michele Ostraat, Advanced Materials Leader for the Aramco Research Center - Boston, serves in a leadership role directing a technical team in applied research in chemistry, materials science, and engineering. Her team translates materials discovery into commercial opportunities for diverse technologies, including membranes for gas separation, porous materials for catalysis, and advanced composites for corrosion resistance.
Prior to joining Aramco, she held numerous technical positions with increased responsibilities spanning new product and process development, prototyping, research and development portfolio management, and technology transfer. Michele was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs and Agere Systems, examining the synthesis of rare-earth doped aerosol nanoparticles and investigating the behavior of chalcogenide phase change materials. At DuPont's Experimental Station, she focused on aerosol synthesis and characterization of sub-micron and nanoparticles for advanced electronic application sand the occupational safety and health of nanomaterials. As Senior Director at RTI International, Michele led scientific teams developing products and applications for aerosols and nanomaterials for energy, defense,and health-related technologies.
Michele earned her Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, CA. She holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Participate in the PowerPoint Karaoke for MIT Postdocs!
As part of the MIT PDA Vendor fair 2018 we host a PowerPoint Karaoke.
We are looking for MIT Postdocs who are passionate about research and can present unknown scientific achievements in an appealing and funny way!
What do you have to do? Actually not much. You (and all other participants) have to provide a short (about 10 min) presentation about your research - which you might have used at a conference or a seminar. The slide decks will be shuffled among all participants on the day of the PowerPoint Karaoke and you have to present an unknown presentation in the funniest way you can think of.

Beginner? Show up early to learn how to play and improve skills. The courts are located in the Zesiger center. Enter through the Vassar street entrance and the attendees at the gate should let you through if you say you are with the PDA and present MIT ID. There are bathrooms in the facility where you can change or come with someone with a membership who can give you access to the locker rooms.

Abstract:  Question answering (QA) requires computers to understand and act upon queries from humans. The process of transforming natural language into precise and executable meaning representations is known as semantic parsing. Can we induce a semantic parser from data using machine learning? The challenge lies in blending the symbolic and statistical sides of AI while retaining the accuracy levels required in finance.

In this talk, we will introduce our research into learning grammars for financial QA in collaboration with Prof. Yoav Artzi of Cornell University. We utilize the combinatory categorical grammar (CCG) framework, which aligns syntax (functions of parts of speech) and semantics (typed lambda calculus). We will assess the challenges of learning and inference in this approach and compare it to other semantic parsing methods.

Speaker: Gautam Shine, ML Research Scientist, Bloomberg

Gautam Shine is a researcher and engineer in the Machine Learning group at Bloomberg. He specializes in natural language understanding and the development of grammars and parsing algorithms for question answering systems. Prior to joining Bloomberg in 2017, he earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Stanford University.
