Gil Syswerda comes from precocious technical beginnings. Gil built his
first computer in middle school, using mechanical relays as logic
components, then built a functioning calculator in high school using
integrated circuit counters and NAND gates. A few years later, as a
computer engineering major at University of Michigan, Gil co-founded his
first startup, which provided important first-hand insights into basic
business principals. Much to the delight of the hundreds of people he has
since advised, Gil’s ambitions in the startup sphere did not end there.
Gil is currently the founder and CTO of two new companies, FeatureX and
Machine Alpha. FeatureX uses computer vision and other machine learning
technologies to discover meaningful patterns of economic activity in the
world's data. Machine Alpha uses machine learning to build systematic
financial trading models. Both FeatureX and Machine Alpha are backed by the
Tudor Investment Corporation and are leveraging that support to rapidly
hire talented research scientists with backgrounds in computer vision and
machine learning.
Previously, Gil was founder and CEO of Machine Insight, a firm engaged in
machine learning research and development. Machine Insight developed
proprietary machine learning technology that finds predictive patterns
invisible to other machine learning techniques. Subsequent to Machine
Insight, Gil co-founded Percipio Capital Management, a machine
learning-based hedge fund that successfully traded in the futures markets.
Gil also co-founded Optimax Systems, a successful AI-based scheduling
company that optimized production in factories. Gil has a patent on the
core combinatorial optimization techniques used by Optimax Systems.
Gil is an angel investor, and an advisor and board member for startups. He
is passionate about building new technologies and remains on the cutting
edge of machine learning research, consistently bringing creativity into
the workplace and inspiring those at FeatureX and Machine Alpha to do the
same.
*What is the CSAIL Alliances Lunch & Learn?*
The CSAIL Lunch & Learn is for all MIT grad students and post-docs
considering a career in industry. Each speaker presents an industry
perspective of a research area and shares their personal journey from
academia to industry.
