Dear MIT Postdocs,
We continue counting the days until Christmas and New Year with all the upcoming MIT events. Have you been to our Ice Skating event last week? I guess that all of your departments and maybe research groups have Holiday or Winter Socials in the next weeks. Have you seen that there is also the Winterfest on Thursday from 3pm - 5pm organized by President and Mrs. Reif?
Have a great week! And Happy St. Nikolaus :)
Best,
Kathrin

Call for a Co-Chair for the Community Building Committee and Volunteers:
The MIT Postdoctoral Association is looking for a new Co-chair for the Community Building Committee (CBC) for 2016. If you enjoy creating opportunities for postdocs to come together with each other and other members of the Greater Boston Community, please consider serving as a CBC Co-Chair. We also need volunteers for the CBC - if you would like to help suggest, organize, or run events that will strengthen the postdoc community at MIT, let us know and we would love to have you on the committee. The goals of the CBC are posted below.
Please get in touch with Virginia (virgy at mit.edu<mailto:virgy at mit.edu>), Paulo (pagarcia at mit.edu<mailto:pagarcia at mit.edu>), or Farrokh (farrokh at mit.edu<mailto:farrokh at mit.edu>) this week if you are interested in chairing or volunteering with the CBC. We will set up a meeting for next week (Dec. 7-11) with interested postdocs to go over the positions in more detail. We would like to have a new chair lined up by the next PDA meeting on December 14.
CBC Goals:
* Encourage participation and involvement within the MIT community
* Enlist the support of MIT postdoctoral trainees towards PDA efforts through committee participation and involvement
* Organize networking and social events that create a supportive peer group and integrate postdocs into the larger MIT community
Application for PDA Conference Travel Grants
The PDA Conference Travel Grants, covering the period from January 1st, 2016 to June 30th, 2016, is now open for application.
The deadline for the online application is December 10th, 2015 and awardees will be announced by the end-of-December 2015.
The grants will be in the amount of up to $1000 for international travel and up to $600 for domestic travel.
We encourage postdoc applicants from all disciplines to participate, as per the eligibility criteria specified below:
1. Applicant must be a current MIT post-doc.
2. Must be presenting a talk/poster at a conference scheduled between January 1st, 2016 to June 30th, 2016.
3. Have not received a past travel grant from the MIT PDA.
4. Submit application only for a single conference.

Travel grants will be paid upon submission of all conference-related receipts to the Treasurer of the PDA (registration fee; travel, lodging, on site transportation, and food). If there are expenses that are being reimbursed by the department or other sources, please indicate this when submitting receipts. Travel grant funds will only cover amounts not already being reimbursed. PI's and departmental administrators will be notified of the award.
Evaluation will be based exclusively on the scientific merits and originality of the submitted work. Therefore, a compelling description of the significance and impact of the presented project is particularly important.

We all hear the buzzword "mentoring" in relation to career success, but most of us don't know how to look for a strong mentor or how to use one effectively once we have found one. How can you maximize your mentoring relationship with your supervisor? How can you go about finding and benefiting from additional mentors? This presentation offers practical advice on building and maximizing mentoring relationships, and is relevant for those on both sides of a mentoring relationship.

2016 IMPACT program for advanced pre-doctoral and post-doctoral trainees
We are happy to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2016 IMPACT program. Based on the successful pilot run last year, the program will provide group interdisciplinary mentorship with teams from academia, medicine, and industry, to help participants focus their research ideas and career goals.
Participants will be challenged to:
- explore and defend the real world impact of their research
- develop the capacity to talk about their work and themselves to diverse audiences
- increase their appreciation for different career paths, and for the mechanisms through which research progresses from lab to real world impact
- build, support, and use diverse professional networks
- craft pro-active strategies for their personal career development.
Participants will leave with a clearer definition of the impact of their work, and will have expanded their professional network in ways that will help them for years to come.
The application form can be accessed at bit.ly/impact16<http://bit.ly/impact16>
Applications are due Dec 18, 2015.
