Call for Proposals
February 12, 2014

*The MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation is announcing its
latest call for proposals*. The Center's grant program is *open to all
MIT faculty with PI status *and provides significant benefits, beyond
just funding, for its recipients.

Post docs who are interested in commercializing a technology should have
a faculty member apply for a grant with the post-doc listed as a team
member.

We are seeking both earlier-stage proof-of-concept explorations with
broad potential impact, and later-stage innovations, that faculty
inventors are eager to see commercialized. The Deshpande Center offers
more than just funding - such as support through the Catalyst program,
exposure through events and other opportunities, and the chance to
participate in i-Teams.

The 3-4 page *pre-proposals are due April 16, 2014 at 5:00 p.m.* Please

* CALL FOR PROPOSALS*

**

*MIT Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation
Fall 2014 Grants*

*Pre-proposals due: April 16, 2014 at 5:00 p.m.*

*OVERVIEW*

Do you need resources to further an unproven concept or invention with
market potential? Is your technology getting close to the
commercialization stage, but you need help determining the right
application or connecting with the business community? This is where the
Deshpande Center for Technological Innovation can help.

*Since 2002, the Deshpande Center has funded 110+ research projects
providing over $12million in funding.*Approximately one-quarter of the
research teams supported by the Deshpande Center commercialize their
technologies either by forming new companies and raising funding, or
licensing their innovations to existing companies. *To date, there have
been 28 spin-outs that have raised over $400 million in capital.*

*The Deshpande Center is announcing a call for proposals for its Fall
2014 round of grants*. The Center supports leading-edge research in
emerging technologies and cultivates interactions between MIT and the
entrepreneurial business community. Funds will be granted in a broad
range of disciplines, for research done at MIT, with the objective to
ultimately license the technology to an outside company or start-up that
will commercialize it. Proposals must be submitted by a faculty member
of MIT.

Along with funding, the Deshpande Center grant recipients receive:

o Exposure through Deshpande Center events and opportunities to
connect with investors, entrepreneurs, the business community,
        and the media as appropriate.
o Support through our Catalyst Program, including customer
contacts, business advice, market input, and IP strategy.
      o Opportunity to participate in i-Teams, a cross-campus course
that involves highly qualified teams of pre-screened graduate
        students in Deshpande Center projects.

*TYPES OF GRANTS:*

  * *Ignition Grants: *
If you have an idea that you believe could address a significant
market need if successful, and you believe you could achieve a
proof-of-concept in less than a year with a *grant of up to
$50,000*, we encourage you to apply for an Ignition Grant.
  * *Innovation Grants: *If you have a technology that you think could
be brought close to commercialization within a year or so with some
additional funding, connections, and advisory support, and you are
eager to see your technology applied to the real world, we encourage
you to apply for an Innovation Grant. *Grants start at $50,000*.
(The committee will consider proposals up to a *maximum of $250,000*
    with strong budget justification.)
  * Don't need the money but need the help? You can still receive
support from the Deshpande Center without having a grant from us.
Give us a call or send us an email to set up a meeting.

*GRANT DECISION PROCESS & CRITERIA*

  * Selection Criteria can be found at http://deshpande.mit.edu/criteria
    <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001OnIhkx5aS8s2kijVf8AEls-weIybE8ZQdAb2EE_6PbemMNX1y8WQYZ9xCEiO5FyB5FiJEUGx43WRdwofSHdLyXuQauXnXLf2q3Mq7L7BNMtUQhK9T1qKkiHtfdPpkuuT>

  * Pre-proposals are reviewed by committee of around 30 reviewers who
are internal and external to MIT.
  * From the initial applicants, typically 7-10 are invited to submit
full proposals. Notifications will be made by May 21, 2014.
  * Those invited then have one month to submit full proposals.
  * Full proposals are sent out for technical review. Applicants will
have suggested reviewers in their pre-proposals.
  * In mid July, applicants make a short (7 min) presentation, followed
by Q&A, to the Grant Review Committee.
  * The proposal, presentation, and technical reviews are all taken into
    account in selecting the grantees.

The grant process is competitive. There are usually more good
applications than there are funds to support them. Typically 4-5 new
grants are awarded.
