Adventure of Institution Building - IIMA & AU
Mr. Prafull Anubhai, Chairman, Board of Management, Ahmedabad University

Institution building is an act of faith.  The outcome often is uncertain.  However, the journey is very exciting, an  "adventure".  In the education sector, institutions pass through various phases of entrepreneurship and maturity - founding phase, start up phase, development phase, consolidation and perpetual rejuvenation. Mr. Anubhai will share his experience of witnessing and building two such adventures -- Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), and Ahmedabad University (AU).

In India, this discussion is taking place against the backdrop of a tectonic shift from public to private education. The challenge here is, how could we provide global education at local cost, context, and ethos? As an educator with deep interest in answering this question, Mr. Anubhai has participated in journey of building IIMA, one of India's leading public institutions, for more than 45 years.  He leads the second adventure of building AU, a private institution. He will discuss how the lessons learnt in the first journey are relevant to the second.

This talk will also be an opportunity to understand the leadership, context and resourcefulness of AU as an institution, and discuss any interests in participating as research collaborators, part-, full-faculty in the various disciplines at AU.

Speaker Bio:
Mr. Prafull Anubhai Shah is an accomplished leader and management consultant in business and education.  He was associated with Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) for over 40 years as Visiting Faculty and as Member of their Board of Governors till he retired from there in 2011.  Mr. Anubhai is currently the Chairman of the Board of Management of the Ahmedabad University.  In the field of education, apart from Ahmedabad University, he is Member of the Governing Boards of Ahmedabad Education Society (AES), Centre for Science Technology and Policy (CSTEP), CEPT University and the Ahmedabad Textile Industry Research Association (ATIRA).  In business, Mr Anubhai has over 30 years of experience as a Chief Executive of a Textile Manufacturing Company.  He is presently the Chairman of Vardhman Special Steels Ltd., and a Director in several companies including Unichem Laboratories Ltd., Vardhman Textiles Ltd., Birla Sun Life Trustee Co. Pvt. Ltd., GRUH Finance Ltd. (a subsidiary of HDFC Ltd.), Torrent Cables Ltd. and the Emerging Market South Asia Fund (EMSAF).  Mr Anubhai is the author of “History of IIMA” which is an excellent record of how IIM Ahmedabad has evolved over the past 50+ years.  He has a deep interest in Indian Classical Music and is the Honorary Director of Saptak Archives, an institution dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of Indian Classical Music.  Mr Anubhai received his B.Sc. (Econ.) from the London School of Economics and attended PMD at Harvard Business School.
