Should You Accept Dysfunctional Relationships at Work?
Do you have problems with someone at work? Your advisor or Principal
Investigator? Is your PI famous but doesn't help you solve or learn anything?
Is there a postdoc who doesn't talk to you? Did someone take credit for your
work, or place blame on you improperly? Do such problems seem UN-solvable? How
can you confront someone with a concern? Is your work environment too
competitive and secretive? Or, do you just wish your relationships with your
coworkers were a bit better? Are there cultural barriers? Maybe you get along
with some postdocs, but you're not really friends. Do you find that
you are less
friendly than when you were in college? (Maybe now you have a "significant
other" and are increasingly treating peers at the office as "insignificant
others," even though you're not really like that!) Maybe you've been at MIT for
over a year but feel that you still haven't developed as many good
relationships as in college or grad school. Do you feel like nobody taught you
"the rules" for getting along well with people here in the Boston area? Are you
accepting the idea that postdocs have to be alone? Don't!
Bring us your problems! Let's share some experiences. You may find
that yours are neither unique nor unsolvable. Or, just come to learn
some general strategies for improving dysfunctional relationships.
RSVP encouraged, but not required, to attend.
