Group leaders-please help us spread the word on our trainings.
*Construction Update*:
*382 and 390 Market Street Common: (382-single family & 390-duplex)
(Saturday Site Supervisor Steve Chooljian)*
Cedar siding is being installed on both houses. We are currently working on
the front and back porches so we can finish the siding.
***We're desperate for a few skilled workers to help us finish some
complicated trim work so we can get the roof on 382 as well as help with the
front porch of 390 so we can start siding the front. Let us know if you
know anyone who might be willing to help out.
*30 Melrose Street- ( 3 single family) (Saturday Site Supervisor-Tom
Baird)*
Our Builder's Blitz in June on Melrose C was a success. Melrose B is
completely framed and awaiting a roof. We'll start to frame Melrose A next
week.
*8-10 Gale Street (duplex): (Saturday Site Supervisor Mike Obar) *
**Gale St. is framed to the second floor. We'll be working on the getting
the roof rafters installed over the next two weeks.
*September 2006 Construction Trainings*
Installing Vinyl Siding
Saturday, September 9th 8:15 a.m. -9:45 a.m. @ Melrose St.
Taught by MVHFH building director, Emerson Dahmen, and long time volunteer,
Tom Baird, this class will provide you with the all the knowledge you need
to know to install siding on your own house. Learn how to set-up a level
starter course, install corners, and work around windows and doors. Vinyl
is final only if it is installed correctly. Come learn how to install it
right. After class, participants will have the rest of the day to put their
new knowledge to work by helping us install the vinyl siding on one of our
homes.
Intro to Construction Tools
Saturday, September 16th 8:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. @ Market St.
Start volunteering with Habitat the right way! Learn how to properly and
safely use the essential hand and power tools. Do you know how to hold a
hammer properly for maximum performance or what all the different speeds on
a screw gun are for?? Come learn all the tricks of the trade. We'll also be
focusing on how to safely use the following power tools: circular saw,
reciprocating saw, chop saw, table saw. Participants will have the chance
to practice and become comfortable with each tool. This class will be
taught by MVHFH Construction Assistant, Lyndsay Hazen and MVHFH Homeowner,
Ruth Reyes.
How to Accurately Calculate and Cut a Common Roof Rafter
Saturday, September 23rd 8:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. @ Melrose St.
Learn how to measure roof pitch and use the formulas on the speed square to
calculate the rafter dimensions. Learn the trick to making an accurate seat
cut and how to identify how much overhang is required. The test will be of
course, if our rafter fits?? After the demonstration, participants will
break into small groups to practice making their own rafter layout.
To sign up for classes, please contact Lyndsay Hazen: 978-681-8858 x16 or
Lyndsay at MerrimackValleyHabitat.org Classes begin promptly at 8:15. Please
