[mit-habitat-exec] Meeting Summary

For people who couldn't make the meeting, or had to leave early, here's the
closest thing to "minutes" we're going to get:
Radhika is still working on getting ahold of the tools from Matt
Debergalis. Once she gets them, we might be able to store them in
McCormick, at least for a little while.
Neha met with Amber Jaycocks to discuss Campus Build. Amber is going to
talk to Lawrence about some of the logistics and get back to us. However,
we're hoping to have it either CPW weekend or Spring Weekend. If Spring
Weekend, we could be partly funded by MIT. If CPW, we'll have beautiful
weather...
Neha went to the YU meeting yesterday. Kickoff with Millard Fuller
cancelled because of lack of time and money. Decide to focus on
youth-related fundraisers instead. There will be an open meeting next
Wednesday. Neha will send out more info on that later. Also Publicity and
Special Events positions are still open, if anyone is interested.
We have 8 workdays scheduled for this term: 4 with Lawrence, 3 with Lowell,
and 1 with South Shore. Neha and Anne will be getting in touch with the
outside groups that have asked about workdays and run the dates by them.
The remaining dates will be opened to Habitat members. Also some talk of
having a booth in Lobby 10 to allow other people to sign up (who aren't in
these groups, or in Habitat). Radhika suggested giving out free cookies too.
5K met with lots of enthusiasm, and took a lot of time to talk about.
Suggestion to open it to everyone, not just kids. Have it be a run/walk.
We can start the runners first, and then let the walkers begin --> Good for
families!
Possible routes:
1) Down Mem. Drive, through Harvard Square, and back down Mass. Ave.
2) Esplanade: Longellow-Harvard loop, BU-Harvard loop, something else
entirely...?
3) Stay on MIT: Amherst, to Vassar, to Sloan, and back down Mem Drive.
3) will probably be the easiest, but 1) and 2) are prettier. Radhika will
harrass the cities of Boston and Cambridge to find out which is best. We'll
probably have to close off streets and hire cops, so *cost* is an
important factor.
Danielle volunteered to talk to other college chapters to get support.
Finding a date will be tough. Walk for Hunger is May 2, Marathon is April
19th (CPW weekend). April 24th is Spring Weekend. May 8th is the weekend
before the last week of classes. The first two weekends in April are free
(I think).
We need to get sponsors. This means doing serious grant writing starting
as soon as we get a route and a date. The sponsors can give us money,
prizes for people who raise lots of money, or just give the walkers/runners
free stuff.
Also discussed how this will be organized. Suggestion to charge a
registration fee for people who register after a certain date. We can ask
people to raise money through sponsors. We can ask for donations. We can
sell Krispy Kremes at $10 apiece to unsuspecting three-year-olds (said
Sid). We can sell tshirts.
Publicity suggestions:
Danielle will take care of other colleges.
We can visit local schools and get the kids excited about it.
Advertise in the Globe.
Advertise on the radio? TV?
Next on the agenda was HabiFest. Decided not to participate, due to time
and resource constraints.
Fall concert fundraiser was discussed briefly. We need a dedicated
committee here over the summer to organize it. Radhika will be here, but
she wants lower-classmen involved too. Harini volunteered. Everyone else
said they'd help if they were around.
Problems with concert:
Cost is high, we would have to work very hard to make a profit. May be
held during Fall Weekend, but fall weekend funding would only cover a
fraction of the cost. Once again, need sponsors. Only worthwhile if we can
get a really good performer. But to make money off that, we'd have to
charge $20+ per ticket, which seems extravagant.
Other option:
Comedian. Much cheaper, much easier to organize, but much lower potential
pay-off.
Sid's going to talk to his contact and get back to us.
And finally: Matt is working on the website. He wants pics if we have them,
and info on upcoming events. If people have any of these things, send them
to him (mzedler).
And that's it. I'll send more later, don't worry. =)
We'll have another meeting when we have stuff to discuss.
I'll send out more specific info about the 5k later.
-Radhika
