[Macpartners] AFP + APFS = sad face

Hi!

I’m late to the party in learning that on Mojave (APFS) AFP support is discontinued. Though in system prefs / sharing / file sharing options it remains as an option?!?

As such I am trying to help a user SMB to their machine from off campus.  It seems that doing such requires VPN.  Safe to assume that is due to firewalling of MITnet?

Are there work arounds to avoid having to use VPN, like using alternate ports and such?  The user I’m helping finds the disconnection of VPN as result of their machine sleeping problematic.

Similarly, trying to tackle this problem from the application side, are there ways to tune VPN to hold open a connection?  The preferences for it seem limited to 5 options.
