Good afternoon,
Each year around this time, MIT's personal web certificates require renewal. Certificates obtained in the past year are set to expire on July 31, 2014. Renewal of personal web certificates is not automatic. To ensure continued access to MIT's secure web applications, such as Atlas, WebSIS, COEUS Lite, and ePaystubs, plan to renew your certificate in the coming weeks.
You May Be Required to Change Your Password
To comply with the security memo from the IT Governance Committee<http://web.mit.edu/itgc/letters/security-memo.html>, an additional step has been added to the certificate renewal process. If you have not changed your password in over a year, you will be prompted to do so when you obtain an MIT personal certificate. For more information and tips on how to choose a strong password, review the Strong Passwords page<http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/3wNt> in the Knowledge Base (insert link).
Getting and Installing Certificates
You can obtain certificates in one of two ways:
· Download the updated CertAid app from the IS&T Software Grid<http://ist.mit.edu/software-hardware?type=All&platform=All&users=All&title=certaid&recommended_only=All> (supports Safari and Internet Explorer only)
· Install certificates using the manual process via the Get an MIT Certificate page<https://ca.mit.edu/> (supports Safari, Internet Explorer and Firefox)
If you use multiple machines and browsers, you will need to obtain a new certificate for each browser on each machine. For more information, see the Certificates page<http://ist.mit.edu/certificates>.
Deleting Expired Certificates
If, after installing your new certificate, you experience problems accessing certificate-protected sites, you may want to try deleting your expired certificates<http://ist.mit.edu/certificates/delete>.
Note for users who encrypt email: Do not delete an expired certificate if you have used it to sign or receive encrypted email. For more information on what to do in that case, see the Export or Backup Your MIT Personal Certificates page<http://kb.mit.edu/confluence/x/GgTn>.
Questions?
IS&T hopes that providing this information now will allow you to plan accordingly. Please encourage those you work with to renew their certificates as well.
If you have questions or concerns, send email to the IS&T Help Desk at helpdesk at mit.edu<mailto:helpdesk at mit.edu> or call them at 617.253.1101. You can also send a request online<http://ist.mit.edu/help>.
