The Java 1.6.0_51 update released yesterday (e.g: Java for OS X 2013-004) breaks MATLAB 2012b.
Symptom: You can open the program but it does't respond to the mouse or keyboard.
Mathworks is apparently working on a solution, but in the meantime avoid installing this update if you depend on MATLAB. If you've already installed the update and MATLAB stopped working, you can fix the problem by downgrading to the previous version. I followed these instructions and it worked for me on OS X 10.8.4. (it's surely different though if you're running Windows)
1) Download Pacifist from http://www.charlessoft.com
2) Download the Apple Java SE 2013-003 update (no longer on the Apple website but still available at: http://apple-java-for-mac.en.softonic.com/mac/download)
3) Don't run the Java installer directly, but instead use Pacifist to open and install the Apple Java package.
