Hi Thomas,
Thanks!
If the problem recurs, I will report the errors reported by Disk Utility and in the System log. I didn't check the amount of swap space being used at the time of the crash. I assume you expect me to get this from Activity Monitor. How should I interpret what it tells me? It is currently reporting 5.92Gb of swap space by the way.
I've included the system information for my mac below.
Here is the system information for my mac:
I purchased the machine in 2011.
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,3
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 8 MB
Memory: 8 GB
Boot ROM Version: MBP81.0047.B27
SMC Version (system): 1.70f6
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
Thanks!
Rocklyn

How much RAM do you have? How much swap was being used prior to restart? Were there any errors indicated in the System log? The fact that disk utility found something, might just be a coincidence.
