Good morning,

Information Services & Technology (IS&T) has updated the Student Virtual Machine (VM) we provide preloaded with Windows 7 SP1, security updates, and bundles of software for students at MIT. The Student VM is part of the generalized Windows 7 VMs IS&T provides the MIT community each year.

The student VM is designed to be used on Windows or Macintosh host machines, but an extra step is required to configure the full features on Windows.

Download and Setup
You can download the VM, set your username and password, and access student-focused Windows software without needing to install Windows or the included applications.

To obtain the appropriate VM and documentation, visit the software grid at

http://ist.mit.edu/software-hardware

Select Virtualization in the What's it for? menu and click Search.
(Certificates required to download)

Please note that in order to use these VMs, you must have VMware Workstation 8.0 or later (for Windows or Linux) or VMware Fusion 4.1 or later (for Macintosh) installed and working beforehand. These VMware products are available from the same software grid.

Documentation
(NOTE: Included are important instructions with regard to McAfee and Virtual Machines on the Macintosh platform)
As you wait for these very large VMs (4+ GB compressed) to download, please read through the short
Introduction to the Student Virtual Machine

Support
The IS&T Help Desk is ready to assist you in setting up these VMs or using the supported software in them. You can contact the Help Desk at (617) 253-1101 or helpdesk at mit.edu<mailto:helpdesk at mit.edu>. You can also submit a request online<http://ist.mit.edu/help>.

IS&T plans to release new versions of these virtual machines twice a year at the start of each semester. The release will include updated versions of software with security and anti-virus patches applied. We welcome feedback about the included software and settings.

We hope these VMs will benefit you and the communities you support.

Thanks,
Jon
