Good Morning,
As of August 1, Information Services & Technology (IS&T) will no longer support Apple machines based on the PowerPC (PPC)architecture. This decision was made based on the following criteria:
● Apple stopped distributing PowerPC-based hardware in August 2006
● Older PPC-based software titles are no longer receiving security updates from their respective manufacturers
● Key MIT applications, including McAfee Security Suite and Microsoft Office 2011, are now Intel-only
● Hardware Services is unable to repair PPC-based Apple equipment due to parts scarcity
As a reminder, IS&T strongly recommends a three-year hardware-renewal cycle for all departments, labs and centers (DLCs). This renewal cycle helps to ensure that machines are current enough to run software recommended and supported by both IS&T and vendors.
Those looking to upgrade equipment can view IS&T’s hardware recommendations<http://ist.mit.edu/services/hardware/presales> online. For further assistance, contact the Help Desk at 617.253.1101 or helpdesk at mit.edu<mailto:helpdesk at mit.edu>.
