[Macpartners] McAfee Security 1.0, does it suck?

Hi Felix.
Here's my experience with this software, so far.

I've been using McAfee Security on a desktop imac and laptop macbook, for a couple of months. Both machines are running latest version of Mac OS X (10.6.2). Have had no problems.

The default install does still set the dat update schedule to 4:45pm daily. I changed this in Preferences to a different time.

The install process also puts an uninstall script in your Applications folder, which I also tested and it appears to work fine.

The only minor hiccup I encountered was a warning when setting up a windows virtual machine under Vmware Fusion. The warning advised me to exclude the virtual machine from scanning by the Mac version of McAfee. Made sense to me since I installed the Windows Virusscan on the virtual machine. Again, exclusion was done via Preferences in McAfee Security and was easy to do.

I like that McAfee Security is more explicit to the user. There's a McAfee shield icon in the menu bar that lets you know the software is active and provides access to the console and settings.

regards,
Barbara

p.s. I've been working with it under an Admin account. Do not know if any issues crop up under more limited accounts.

Hello colleagues,

We have received a notice of McAfee releasing Security 1.0 for the Mac. Does anyone know whether they fixed their long-standing problems of numerous vshieldscanner processes, which in many instances would slow the Mac to a crawl, and also the difficulty of uninstalling the program.

These problems persuaded me and many others not to install this software in the past, so I want to know the pros and cons of the new version.
