[Macpartners] weird Mac behavior

Well, I just restarted, and things seem to be back to normal.. but why
did this happen? and how can I keep it from happening again?

I clicked on an icon in my doc, expecting the app (which was hidden)
to appear. Instead, I was shown the applications folder, with the
icon for the app I wanted visible. I tried another hidden app - and
got the same thing: the folder rather than the app.

I tried clicking on the dock's icon for an app that was closed - and
there, too, I was shown the folder but not the app.

A friend had used my Mac yesterday, and seems to have changed some
viewing prefs... so I thought this might be related (although if so,
why hadn't it happened earlier in the day?)

So I tried looking in the systems pref folder to see if there's a
preference that could have changed... but didn't see anything useful.

So I decided to send an email to mac-partners... but when I clicked on
the Mail box where I keep my related emails (to check the address), I
couldn't access the messages -- I stayed in the In box. In fact, I
tried visiting other boxes: each one was highlighted, until half my
box titles were highlighted... but none of the boxes opened.

At which point I restarted... and things look okay so far. But what
happened? And how can I keep it from happening again?
