ARD features autoinstall accomplished using a Task Server:
Q. What is AutoInstall?
A. AutoInstall is a new feature in Apple Remote Desktop 3 that
allows administrators to
install software on a computer that is not currently connected to the
network. This is
an ideal solution for customers who need to keep mobile computers
running up-to-
date software.
Q. How does AutoInstall work?
A. AutoInstall uses a Task Server to stage installation of software
packages. The Task
Server will monitor the network for the next time that the computer
is back online and will copy the software packages to the client for
installation.
Q. What is a Task Server?
A. A Task Server is a computer other than the administrator’s
computer that can be used
to perform package installation and report gathering tasks. A Task
Server requires
that customers purchase and install a separate Unlimited Managed
Systems license of Apple Remote Desktop 3.
Q. What other Apple Remote Desktop tasks use a Task Server?
A. Apple Remote Desktop 3 can also use a Task Server to collect
reporting information
from client computers.
Q. Why use a Task Server?
A. By using a computer other than the administrator’s computer,
customers can have a
dedicated system that is always on the network and available to
collect reporting data and to distribute software packages.
