Not everything in Mac OS X is resolved through /etc/resolv.conf and
there is a lookupd cache which in this case may have been in your way.
lookupd -flushcache

Yes, indeed that works. Thanks!
Strangely, doing that puts "search mit.edu" into /etc/resolv.conf, even
though such a line in /etc/resolv.conf seems to be neither sufficient
nor required under Tiger.
