[Macpartners] How do I set the default DNS domain under Tiger?

I recently upgraded to Tiger and I no longer seem to have a default
DNS domain.  E.g.,

   % ping lexx

outputs

  ping: cannot resolve lexx: Unknown host

Instead I have to do

   % ping lexx.mit.edu

My hostname seems to be properly set to the fully qualified domain
name.  E.g.,

  % hostname

outputs

  lexx.mit.edu

I tried adding "domain mit.edu" and "search mit.edu" to
/etc/resolv.conf, but neither of these things seemed to make a
difference.

Any ideas on how I tell Tiger what my default domain should be?
