Good morning,

The IS&T CD Release Team has begun planning and production of the sixth
version of the "Fall 2005 Getting Started CD" for Macintosh, Windows and
Linux platforms. Past releases of the CD have been identified by the label
design; the most recent design was silver with black text with the newest
IS&T logo. This year, we are working to create a unique color design for
the CD.

The History of the CD:
The CD was originally produced to handle the bottleneck of new students who
arrive at the start of the fall term needing the core software applications
installed on their computers and was especially helpful to those with slow
Internet connections.

What has changed:
Today, most students have access to faster Internet connections both on and
off campus. Much of the software students need to use comes pre-installed
on their machines, such as recommended browsers and email clients. For
next year, the team plans to look at enhancing services to students in
terms of software distribution.

The CD release team is currently reviewing the contents to be included on
the CD. Our goal is to have the CD ready for duplication by the beginning
of August for distribution in time for back to school. For more
information on the CD and the release effort, see the CD Release Notebook
at http://web.mit.edu/swrt/releases/mitcd/. If you have questions or
suggestions, please contact the team via email at cd-release at mit.edu.
