Good afternoon,
Information Services and Technology is pleased to announce enhanced
support and documentation for Mail, the e-mail program bundled with
Mac OS X 10.3.
This marks the first, full-fledged IS&T release of Mail.
IS&T recommends that Macintosh users of Eudora with Post Office
Protocol (POP) who wish to use Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP),
the default method for accessing e-mail at MIT, strongly consider
switching to Mail, which provides a better user experience than
Eudora with IMAP. In addition, IS&T recommends that new students,
faculty, and staff using Macs configure Mail to access their e-mail.
Notable Features of Mail
------------------------
- View related e-mails in a single group or thread
- Unicode 4.0 support; support for multiple languages
- Easily drag and drop e-mail addresses between To, Cc and Bcc fields
- Uses the Safari HTML rendering engine for displaying HTML e-mail
- Supports SMTP authentication
- Spam detection and deletion; including using SpamAssassin headers
How to Obtain
-------------
As a component of Mac OS X, all Mac OS X users already have a version
of Mail installed. By using Software Update and staying current with
operating system and security updates, users will have the latest
version of Mail. The latest version of Mail currently supported by
IS&T is 1.3.10, installed by the Mac OS X 10.3.9 update.
Known Issues
------------
After updating to Mac OS X 10.3.9, some Mail users are unable to
receive e-mail consistently or receiving e-mail takes an inordinate
amount of time. Users experiencing this problem should read the stock
answer at http://itinfo.mit.edu/answer.php?id=7890 for a recommended
fix.
Getting Help
------------
The Mail at MIT page is located at:

The Computing Help Desk will provide configuration assistance for new
users of Mail.
Support for migrating Eudora mailboxes to Mail is pending, users
switching to Mail should leave their archived e-mail in Eudora.
Support for Mail 2, which ships with Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger", will be
available by the end of August.
If you have a question or need assistance, please contact the
Computing Help Desk at computing-help at mit.edu or x3-1101.
