Special Issue: Air Transportation: Strategic, Managerial, Economic, and Policy Issues
In December 2019, Bloomberg News published an article titled "Here's How Miserable 2019 Was for the Airline Industry."[1] Little did the authors know that the industry would take a turn for the (much) worse just a few months later. The ongoing pandemic is just another item on the long list of issues-fluctuating fuel prices, geopolitical incidents, aircraft design problems and macroeconomic developments, to name just a few-that make uncertainty the only constant in the aviation industry. This uncertainty brings about constant change: Airline and airport business models evolve, passenger preferences and travel patterns change, new technologies create efficiencies and opportunities, regulatory interventions and policies foster or hinder the growth of air service networks, etc. These developments not only call for new research on strategic, managerial, economic, and policy issues in the aviation sector but also suggest that relationships that were proposed and studied previously may need to be re-evaluated. We are, therefore, pleased to invite submissions to the special issue on "Air Transportation: Strategic, Managerial, Economic, and Policy Issues" in Transportation Journal.
Topic areas: As outlined above, the topical focus is rather broad. Relevant topics may include but are not limited to issues relating to
* competition, multi-market contact, and consolidation
* alliances, mergers & acquisitions, vertical relations
* network management, market entry and exit
* capacity management and congestion
* sustainability (including noise and pollution management)
* forecasting and yield management
* marketing and communications management
* operations management and operating efficiency
* safety and security
* economic growth and tourism
* intermodal competition
* regulation and policy (e.g., Open Skies)
in the context of the aviation industry. The industry includes passenger/cargo airlines, airports, and vendors such as distribution management system providers.
Types of research : We encourage submissions that address strategic, managerial, economic, or policy issues relevant to the aviation industry. Strong manuscripts will draw on and contribute to the further development of applicable theories and be of interest to executives and/or policy makers. Papers may be empirical or non-empirical. Theoretical/analytical papers must have strong practical implications to be considered for this special issue.
Timeline: The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2021. Submissions must be made through the Journal's online manuscript management system.
