<p class="MsoNormal">In December 2019, Bloomberg News published an article titled “Here’s How Miserable 2019 Was for the Airline Industry.”<a style="mso-footnote-id:ftn1" href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif;mso-fareast-language:EN-US">[1]</span></span></span></a>
Little did the authors know that the industry would take a turn for the (much) worse just a few months later. The ongoing pandemic is just another item on the long list of issues—fluctuating fuel prices, geopolitical incidents, aircraft design problems and
macroeconomic developments, to name just a few—that make uncertainty the only constant in the aviation industry. This uncertainty brings about constant change: Airline and airport business models evolve, passenger preferences and travel patterns change, new
technologies create efficiencies and opportunities, regulatory interventions and policies foster or hinder the growth of air service networks, etc. These developments not only call for new research on strategic, managerial, economic, and policy issues in the
aviation sector but also suggest that relationships that were proposed and studied previously may need to be re-evaluated. We are, therefore, pleased to invite submissions to the special issue on “Air Transportation: Strategic, Managerial, Economic, and Policy
Issues” in <i>Transportation Journal</i>.<o:p></o:p></p>
