Blues: Solo, Riffin', & Cuttin' Workshops with Jan Marie

Saturday, December 8, 2012
MIT Building 36, room 112
MAP: http://whereis.mit.edu/?q=36

Classes are appropriate for both swing and blues dancers
alike.

Solo Blues Moves & Isolations (12:30 - 1:30 p.m.)

We'll dig into some key solo moves, which may include:
fishtails, shimmies, shake n' bake, the mooche, the grind,
slides, pops, mess-arounds, or the James Brown. Time
permitting, we will also learn to dance only isolated parts
of our body, to really let that "deep shoulder action"
 shine!

Riff It... Riff It Good... (1:45 - 2:45 p.m)

We'll cover the four fundamental components of call &
response blues dancing, then learn to work in our solo
movements and isolations to incite our partner's
creativity. You'll be expressively riffing off one another
 by the end of class!

The Jam Circle: Demystified (3:00 - 4:00 p.m.)

This is the most fun you will have all day: guaranteed.
 Everything you've learned about solo/call & response
dancing gets put to the test... and everyone comes out a
winner. Learn the basics of solo cuttin' etiquette, then
battle your classmates for practice and hilarity abounding!

Feedback/Q&A (4:00 - 4:30 p.m.)

Jan Marie will be sticking around for an extra half-hour to
answer any lingering questions you have about class
content! Feel free to stay and dance amongst yourselves,
get feedback, and ask any questions you need.

Pricing:

MIT Students: FREE!!!!!!!!!!!! (with student ID)
General: $10 per class OR $20 for the full day (3 classes +
 Q&A session)

About Jan Marie:

Whether dancing, teaching, organizing, or singing a ditty
or two, Jan Marie has been active in the blues & swing
communities for the past six years. As a teacher, Jan Marie
focuses on helping students develop self-awareness, musical
movement, and communicative connection-- rather than just
patterns and steps. She strives to empower students to
define and assert their own dance voices in partnered
 movement.
