Inside Leonardo 45:2: Prepared for emergences: Mutant frogs, sound
swarms and music critics were some of the ways Tom Davis coaxed self-
organizing art out of complexity science. Information artist v. media
meltdown: In the heat and hubbub of Japan's nuclear crisis, Rama
Hoetzlein designed an on-line data artwork to cut through a spreading
cloud of info-pollution. Changing the mental climate: A storm surge
of art-science-community action is giving shapes and sounds to our
brave new climate dystopia and what we can do to change it. The
multiple choice: How do our brains handle challenging images?
Microscopist Amanda Wilson surveys artists, scientists and a third
kind. Find out more
LEA CALL FOR PAPERS: ASTRONOMY, LUNACIES AND ENDS OF THE WORLD
Are the contemporary lunacies and conspiracy theories on the end of
the world in 2012 just another cultural fad similar to the end of the
world in the year 2000 or in the year 1000? Is the world really
destined to end or does the Mayan calendar’s prediction represent
another excuse to develop myths and illusions? Proposals are invited
from artists and scientists that work on issues related to astronomy,
mythologies, social behaviors, conspiracy theories inspired by
astronomy as well as eschatological interpretations of historical and
contemporary times. Interdisciplinary proposals that merge
astronomical science and psychology, popular culture, sociology, mass
media or philosophical analyses are particularly welcome. We welcome
exploration of deep ecology and global management of the earth as a
system as ways of avoiding catastrophic futures. Deadline for
proposals: 1 June 2012 Find out more
LEONARDO ABSTRACTS SERVICE UPCOMING DEADLINE: 30 JUNE 2012
As we near the end of the academic year, we want to bring the
Leonardo Abstract Service (LABS) to the attention of students and
educators. Students who will be getting an M.A., M.F.A. or Ph.D. in a
subject related to the intersection of art, science and technology
are encouraged to submit an abstract of their thesis to the LABS
database. The LABS database, which has been in existence for over 10
years, functions as a way for international artists and scholars to
learn about the work of the next generation. The database is peer-
reviewed, and the top-ranking authors are invited to publish their
abstracts in Leonardo and Leonardo Electronic Almanac (LEA).
Educators: Please bring the LABS database to the attention of your
students! Find out more Find out more
