Yonatan Shapira is former Captain in the Israeli Air Force Reserves. In
2003, Yonatan initiated a group of Israeli Air Force pilots who refused to
fly attack missions on Palestinian territories.
Sulaiman Khatib, 33, is a former Palestinian guerilla who spent 10 years in
Israeli prisons for fighting for the liberation of the Palestinian people.
The "Combatants for Peace" movement was started jointly by Palestinians and
Israelis who have previously taken an active part in the cycle of violence,
Israelis as soldiers in the Israeli army (IDF) and Palestinians as part of
the violent struggle for Palestinian freedom. After brandishing weapons
for so many years, and having seen one another only through gun-sights,
they no longer believe that the conflict can be resolved through violence
and have decided to put down their guns, and to fight for peace.
