To follow up on this -- any pre-operation plugins returning
a non-zero error code also prevent the "front end" from
calling the "back end" (in this case KDB).

Of course, one thing about SLAPI that one would wish to avoid
replicating is its very ambiguous definition of what return
codes trigger which behaviour.
