short answer: i guess. i think a judicious AC_PROG_LIBTOOL() in the
consumers' configure.ac should lard the appropriate gunk into her/his
Makefile.in to capture that info at consumers' clients' package build
time, but at what toll on everyone's sanity, i can't say. to call this
``punting'' is to call the Louisiana Purchase a minor asset liquidation.
