Mac OS X defaults utility

you say to run this command

sudo defaults write com.apple.loginwindow AuthenticatorBundle 
/System/Library/Authenticators/Kerberos.loginAuthenticator

I noticed that the file getting updated is 
/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwidnow.plist.  I would 
have thought that the file that gets updated should be 
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwidnow.plist

Do you guys know for sure?
