ktadd hangs

Using kadmin.local, ktadd hangs when I run it (principal is valid)

ktadd imap/mail.terranovum.com

but suceeds when I run it with the -k switch.

ktadd -k /usr/local/etc/kerberos/krb5kdc/nova.keytab 
imap/mail.terranovum.com

Any ideas?
