libcom_err.so.2 and libcom_err.so.3

libcom_err.so.2 is provided by e2fs-progs, and libcom_err.so.3 is
provided by mit's krb5.

What is actually the difference between them? As far as I know, this has
been going on for a long time, couldn't these libs be "unified"?

The problem? There are applications which link against krb5 libraries but
due to other libraries also end up loading libcom_err.so.2.
