Subject: Curator Positions in the History of Technology
Dear Dr. Smith,
Good morning. I’m the chair of the Division of Work & Industry at the National Museum of American History, and I’m writing to let you know about two, new curatorial positions we have in the history of technology.
The one in my division is titled Curator of the History of Technology with a focus on energy production or engineering, broadly conceived. We have terrific collections in each of these areas and are particularly strong in engineering, but we’re looking for an historian (Ph.D. in hand or completed by August) to reimagine the work we’re doing. I could imagine someone working in the social and cultural history of the oil industry, for instance, who could also build that collection!
These are full-time permanent positions that start at about $80K. As a curator the person would be required to do research in their area of expertise and publish on that research, but also survey and make recommendations about the collections, do new collecting, and participate in developing exhibitions. This is an exciting moment at the NMAH; we’ve hired over 20 new curatorial staff with strong academic backgrounds and are poised to rethink the east wing of the museum as a place where we can share new stories about Science and Technology Studies in a more global context.
If you know anyone who might be interested, can you share these job ads with them? They will close on June 8 and candidates will need to create a profile and a federal resume in USAJobs. If they’ve never done that before, it’s best to get an early start. Although we don’t require a cover letter or reference letters at this stage, they should also submit a clean CV and cover letter as supplemental materials. I’m happy to answer any questions about the position or USAJobs if folks want to send me an email. We have a two-step process much like academia where we’ll interview a group of semi-finalists in July or August via Skype and then invite two or three finalists to the museum to do job talks in the fall.
I’m including links to our ad plus one more in information technology history.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Best,
Kathleen
