The MIT Club of Boston is pleased to announce a very special event as
we host MIT’s President, Susan Hockfield. Please join us on Friday,
March 19 as we gather for an informal reception followed by brief
remarks and an interactive conversation with MIT’s 16th President. The
evening will include a cocktail reception with open bar, remarks and
discussion with President Hockfield, followed by a dessert reception.
Please register in advance as there is limited capacity and this is
sure to be a popular event.
Having served MIT since December 2004, President Hockfield has a
distinct vision of the vital role that science and technology, and MIT
in particular, play in the world today. Dr. Hockfield has been a vocal
advocate for the importance of science and research as cornerstones of
industry and economic growth. She has been a force behind the creation
of the MIT Energy Initiative, an Institute wide effort to harness
MIT’s resources around the cross-functional technical and policy
challenges facing today’s world. During President Hockfield’s tenure,
MIT has also continued to collaborate across the lines between life
sciences and engineering with particular focus on cancer research. Dr.
Hockfield has also presided over a sustained upgrade of on-campus
facilities supporting the needs of student life, teaching and research.
As MIT’s first life scientist, and first woman to serve as President,
she has a unique perspective of MIT’s past and future. We look forward
to an engaging evening that will be focused on where MIT goes from here.
This event will be hosted by the MIT Club of Boston and the MIT Alumni
Association at the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research, 220
Mass. Ave, Cambridge - an exciting new venue that has its own
fascinating history. Some of you will remember this location as the
site of the NECCO Wafer Factory (from 1927 - 2003) - once the world's
largest candy manufacturing facility. Now the home of Novartis
Research, it is stop #8 on the "Boston Globe's Red Line Tour of
Innovation" and the building itself is a testament to the ever-
changing local economy. Parking is available at meters on the street
and is free after 6 PM. The closest garage is the University/Star
Market Garage on Green St.
Details about pricing for Club members, non-members, as well as
special opportunities to become a member now are available here.
