Hockfield has a distinct vision of the vital role that science and technology,
and MIT in particular, play in the world today. Dr. Hockfield has been a vocal
advocate for the importance of science and research as cornerstones of industry
and economic growth. She has been a force behind the creation of the MIT Energy
Initiative, an Institute wide effort to harness MIT’s resources around the
cross-functional technical and policy challenges facing today’s world. During
President Hockfield’s tenure, MIT<span style="mso-spacerun: yes">&nbsp;
</span>has also continued to collaborate across the lines between life sciences
and engineering with particular focus on cancer research. Dr. Hockfield has
also presided over a sustained upgrade of on-campus facilities supporting the
