3. Learn to better communicate your research to non-scientists at the
Workshop on Communicating Science & Engineering with Chris Mooney

When: May 24, 2010-9am-1pm. Lunch will be provided.
Where: MIT- Room/Bldg TBA
Why: These days, amid ongoing media controversies over climate change,
the teaching of evolution, the safety of vaccines, and many other
scientific topics, researchers are increasingly asking themselves
questions like these: Should I be doing more to communicate about my
work to the public? And if so, how should I go about preparing for media
encounters—and what should I be ready to say? This workshop will help.

Due to the heavy interest in this workshop, we will be accepting
participants on an application basis. Please email your name,
institution, year, program, and a brief paragraph explaining why your
interested in this workshop to mooneyworkshop at gmail.com. Applications
are due May 14. We will notify all applicants of their status no later
than May 17.

4. Hope in Action @ MIT is a new student-led social justice and
community organizing initiative. We aim to bring together and mobilize
members of the MIT community--students, faculty, staff--to take
collective action to address the needs of our local Cambridge community,
particularly around education.

Hope in Action @ MIT is now in partnership with the Margaret Fuller
Neighborhood House, a longstanding community development organization in
Cambridge's Area IV. Area IV, the neighborhood right next door to MIT,
is one of Cambridge's most diverse neighborhoods, but also its most
economically underserved. Through the Margaret Fuller House, we aim to
build a long-term relationship between MIT and Area IV, which will allow
MIT community members to work together with Area IV residents to uplift
their community. From tutoring neighborhood kids, to developing an
afterschool program, to planting a community garden over the summer,
there are many directions our work with Area IV could take.

Help us decide upon them, and make them happen! Hope in Action is asking
members of the MIT community to join us by committing 1% of their time
or money for the next year to working with the Margaret Fuller House in
Area IV. From January 23rd to April 10th, 2010, we are mounting a
campaign to engage 80 people in making 1% commitments. Each member
becomes a part of our collective decision-making process, and gets a say
in determining the forms our Area IV partnership takes. We believe that
by asking many people to donate a little, we can accomplish a lot, and
make a real difference in the lives of our neighbors. Will you become a
part of Hope in Action?

Interested or want more information? E-mail Carol Huang
(shhuang at mit.edu) or the Hope in Action @ MIT leader Nicholas Hayes
(nicholas at diomassintern.org).
