GSC HCA Family Subcommittee meeting
Meeting Minutes
Tuesday Sep 17, 2013
Introductions: Brittney, Nora, Emily, Sarah, Tiky, Anna and Marzyeh were present.
Marzyeh talked about the Family Subcommittee’s role within the GSC as being a subcommittee under the Housing and Community Affairs Committee.
Anna talked about the Family Subcommittee’s past projects, especially the recommendation to EBOC with regards to enrollment and tuition policies at the new TCC Koch childcare center, and the recently launched Back-up Child Care Program for students, as well as the ODGE and GSC funded project to research the potential for creating a need-based childcare or a family grant for students with children.
We talked about ideas for advocacy and activities for the academic year 2013-2014
We would like to broaden our scope beyond childcare as it seems that our most
important goals, back-up childcare, family daycare network and a need-based grant, have already been reached (back-up childcare program) or have received positive reactions from the administration (family childcare network and need- based grant).
Changing the on-campus family housing policy to take into account better the families’ needs for stability in terms of schools and childcare arrangements
Creating one location for all family related information which will be easy to
access. Currently information is very much dispersed among different offices.
Increasing spousal access to on-campus facilities.
Giving MIT affiliated families access to Eastgate playground and creating an after
hours access to the playground at Stata (card access).
Providing childcare through MIT babysitters at the Z-center during certain days
and hours of the week (e.g. 2 times per week at 8am-noon).
Creating fun, regular activities for MIT children, e.g. Simmons Hall play hours
once a month, activities through the Lifelong Kindergarten group at Media Lab.
We will discuss these ideas more in the next meeting and choose the ones we would like to focus on first.
Next meeting will be in October (date TBD) and meeting place will alternate between Eastgate and Westgate throughout the year.
We talked about creating a poster advertising the subcommittee. This is a great time to recruit new members.

Please let me know if you will need babysitting for this meeting by the end of day tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who has already done so! As always, dinner will be provided.

I would also like to talk about the subcommittee's leadership, so if you are interested in becoming a co-chair, please be sure to come to the meeting. I would also be more than happy to chat before the meeting, so don't hesitate to contact me.
