TL;DR: Please read this article and take the action described at the end.
This op-ed<https://thetech.com/2021/04/15/critique-strategic-plan-op-ed> from students on the DEI Strategic Action Plan Steering Committee details how MIT’s promise of an “explicit, directional, and aspirational set of actions for MIT” was, behind closed doors, turned into a plan that does not successfully address any dimensions of what we feel constitutes an antiracist framework. For MIT’s strategic plan to not be fully antiracist, against the backdrop of what seems like never-ending violent manifestations of systemic racism in the news, is simply unacceptable.
Students request that by May 7, Academic Council respond to our proposed changes to the strategic plan with clear answers of what they will commit to adopt. If the response is unsatisfactory, the students on the steering committee will reconsider our future participation.
If you support the article, please email Provost Martin Schmidt (schmidt at mit.edu<mailto:schmidt at mit.edu>), ICEO John Dozier (jdozier at mit.edu<mailto:jdozier at mit.edu>), and cc steercomm-students at mit.edu<mailto:steercomm-students at mit.edu> saying “I support the student call for Institute-wide standards”.
Best,
GSC DEI
