What: Academic Career Series: "The Nuts and Bolts of the Academic Job Search"
When: Tuesday August 4, 4--5.30pm
Where: Room 6-120
Contact: Ulric Ferner and Clarice Aiello, gsc-arc at mit.edu
The academic job market has become increasingly competitive
over the last decade. The academic career series is a set of
seminars held by the GSC aimed at all MIT students and postdocs
who are interested in academic careers. This seminar, "The Nuts
and Bolts of the Academic Job Search" will be a panel discussion
about the strategies faculty use to secure academic positions.
This includes general insight into the faculty selection process,
the priorities of faculty/academic search committees compared with
industrial organizations, academic job interviewing techniques,
and how the increasingly competitive job market is changing the
faculty search process. The panel will be made up of academic
scientists and engineers at different stages in their careers;
all graduate students and visiting scholars are welcome to attend.

What: Volunteer to mentor an incoming international graduate student
Where: http://gsc.mit.edu/mentor
Contact: International Community Fellow, clarice at mit.edu
Current graduate students, both domestic and international,
are invited to volunteer as mentors to first year international
graduate students. The International Graduate Student Mentorship
Program helps new incoming graduate students transition to graduate
student life at MIT. The goal is to provide first year
international graduate students - and their mentors - an
opportunity for cultural exchange, to learn more about Cambridge
and Boston, and the overall culture of MIT.
Each incoming international graduate student will be paired with
a current graduate student or alumnus according to MIT department,
country of origin, interests, conversational topics, etc.
The incoming student will be in e-mail contact with his/her
mentor in late August prior to arriving at MIT. During the
fall Orientation, we ask all mentee and mentors to plan to
meet-up at the International Students Mentorship Reception
on September 10 from 6-8 pm in Morss Hall (Walker Memorial).
Sign up now! Deadline is August 15: http://gsc.mit.edu/mentor
