Help installing

Hi, I'm not really familiar with Unix system so I'm kinda lost as of how
to modify the makefile or the gaconfig.h.  I'm trying to install GAlib
using Unix platform, and I got the error message that basically says

make: Fatal error in reader: makefile, line 6: Unexpected end of line seen

or if it's not line 6 (because I comment them), then it would be other
lines.

Could anybody help me?

Also, we currently have either Win2000 or XP (none of Win9x/NT) at school.
Can I install GAlib in Win2000?
