Title: Reducing Risk in Basin Scale CO2 Injection Through Monitoring and Verification

Abstract:
Geological sequestration of CO2 is an option for reducing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gas and mitigating global climate change. Our technical ability to safely store CO2 in the subsurface has been demonstrated through a number of pilot projects, and a long history of enhanced oil recovery operations. For sequestration to play a role in addressing CO2 emissions, injection must occur at the basin scale. This represents a scale up of current operations by two orders of magnitude. Injection at this scale raises issues of safety and security. Risks associated with basin scale injection may be environmental, financial or safety related. Monitoring and verification are key components in managing risk in CO2 sequestration. This talk will examine the risks associated with basin scale injection and present a framework for designing a monitoring program which balances issues of risk and operational concerns.

Bio:
Carolyn Seto is the Clare Boothe Luce Fellow at the MIT Energy Initiative, hosted by the McRae Group in Chemical Engineering. She is researching model based methods to integrate data and enhance monitoring capability in CO2 injection, and is a contributor to the MIT Future of Natural Gas Study, investigating the role of technology on unconventional gas recovery. Her research interests include geological CO2 sequestration, modeling multiphase flow in porous media, analytical solutions to hyperbolic conservation laws and unconventional resource production. She holds a BSc degree in engineering chemistry from Queen’s University and MSc and PhD degrees in petroleum engineering from Stanford University. Previously, she has held reservoir engineering positions at Shell, BP and Chevron in North America and North Africa.
